Do you enjoy food and cooking and sharing that with others? I have come upon this company that has been in business for a long time and has a nostalgic appeal to me because it kind of reminds me of the old days and Tupperware parties.
It is called Tastefully Simple. Should you take a bite or avoid this food MLM?
You should know that I am not an Independent Consultant with this company, nor have I ever been. My mission is to find potential ways for you to generate some income from home in your retirement and give you a ‘book report’ based on my findings. I don’t want you to miss an opportunity that could be attractive to you, but at the same time, I don’t want you to put a bunch of money into something that may not give you a good return for your investment.
What is Tastefully Simple?
Tastefully Simple is a networking marketing company, or MLM, in the gourmet food/cooking/lifestyle space. They sell products such as:
- meal kits
- bread, muffin and cake mixes
- gourmet oil and vinegar and dressings
- specialty holiday foods
There is also a plethora of recipes to utilize all these products to create delicious meals and snacks. They are also quick and easy to prepare.
You can join as an Independent Consultant and sell these products at parties at your home, on social media, via an e-catalog to your customers or through your replicated website.
Who is Tastefully Simple For?
Primarily women, younger stay-at-home moms and people looking for a side job to supplement their income. The crucial criteria are that you must enjoy cooking and baking and food-related things.
I don’t really think this is a great business idea for those of us hoping to generate some income from home. Perhaps you will agree with me as you read further into my review.

My Review of Tastefully Simple
Tastefully Simple has a very attractive website that showcases its products and how they can be used in a large variety of recipes. There is also a very upbeat, positive vibe on their website and it feels welcoming rather than they are trying to force-feed you their business opportunity (pun intended).
Jill Blashack Straham founded the company in 1995 from her shed and was packing orders on a pool table. Jill has been recognized for her entrepreneurship and is certainly a leader in the direct sales arena. Company headquarters are in Minnesota. Tastefully Simple is also a member of the Direct Selling Association. The DSA is the National Trade Association that protects, promotes and polices the direct selling industry.
There is no doubt that this company is legit, but let’s find out if it is worth your investment and time to join.
First, though, let’s talk about Tastefully Simple products.
The company features individual products as well as ‘Meal Kits’. The way it works is that you provide the fresh meat/vegetables for your meal and they supply you with the seasonings, recipes and a grocery shopping list to make it easy.
For example, they have a ‘cutting carbs’ 10-meal kit which includes 10 dinners, the grocery list you will need for those 10 meals, and the seasonings required to create them. Price: $69.95
Examples of individual products include:
- spinach and herb seasoning 1.5 oz shaker jar, price: $9.99
- citrus herb seasoning 4.4 oz shaker jar, price: $9.99
- ultimate steak seasoning 6.5 oz shaker jar, price $9.99
They also feature:
- cutting carbs
- freezer meals
- special meals for entertaining and parties/events
- gift boxes
Compensation Plan/Earning potential
I actually reached out to Tastefully Simple to ask them about their compensation plan and they very readily provided it to me. You can view the entire plan here.
The commission structure is a little easier to understand than many MLM’s but I will still break it down to basics.
The commissions are paid on a graduated scale which is based on your total sales each month. If you sell less than $100 a month of products, you receive 10% credit on your account which they will place there at the end of the month. If you are able to sell $100 to $499 in a month, you will receive a 15% commission and it goes up from there:
- $500 = 20% commission
- $1000 = 25%
- $1500 = 30%
- $2000 = 35%
- $3000 = 40%
The company also offers incentives and rewards including cash bonuses and trips. Training to use the products is provided online and at events.
Ways to earn include:
- person to person sales (that will be your family, friends and inner circle of course)
- catalog sales
- special events such as trade shows, expos, and open houses
- Facebook digital parties
- your own replicated website
They do not heavily promote the fact that you have to recruit others to start building your downline and earning higher commissions, but that is what you will need to be doing if you want to make a decent income going forward.
You will also need to pay shipping fees which can get quite high, so you need to factor that into the cost of running your consultant business.
For example, if you order $60 worth of product to be delivered by ground, you will need to pay 12% of that for shipping = $6.99
If you purchase $150.00 worth of product by ground delivery you will pay 25% of the order = $39.95
If you want your TS supplies delivered quicker, this shipping goes up.
This is a cost that can really add up!
Below, I have posted a few comments about Tastefully Simple to help you decide if this might be a company you would like to join.
Unfortunately, there is no income disclosure available to show you, though I did ask the company to provide me with one and they politely refused. This is a red flag for me because they are so upfront about who they are and how legit the company is yet there is no public document that shows us the earning statistics.
Pros and Cons
- authentic owner
- genuine products
- been in business since 1995
- no income disclosure
- the high failure rate with the MLM business model
- have to hassle family and friends
Final Comments About Tastefully Simple
There is no doubt that Tastefully Simple is a legitimate business. It is not a scam.
There is definitely a fun ‘feel’ to this company and they have not had any lawsuits to speak of nor is there a lot of negative press about them in general. I guess it also reminds me of when my mother would hostess Tupperware parties to help out her friends. That was the 60’s (sigh).
However, that was the past and although there are things I like about this company, it still uses that MLM business model which always boils down to having to keep purchasing products to maintain your commissions and then coercing family and friends to join you on your endeavor.
Network Marketing has a high failure rate. But don’t just take my word for it. There are statistics from the Consumer Awareness Institute that back this up. If you are still interested in joining an MLM, I have created a checklist for you to see if you think you have what it takes to succeed with this business model.
Of course, you don’t have to host parties to make money with Tastefully Simple. Your customers can shop online and work your whole business from your phone if you want. But the best way to seduce people through food is to let them smell it and taste it, right? To make that happen, you will be needing to cook, set up your products, invite friends over, market your stuff and clean up. It just seems like a lot of work to me and we are trying to do less at this point, yes?
If you just want to join to get free products, then I suggest you go to a party and try it for yourself. If you love it you may want to join to get discounts on the products.
But I can’t recommend that you join Tastefully Simple to create some income from home. I don’t think it will be simple and I don’t suggest you take a bite out of this food MLM.
There Is Another Way To Generate Online Income
Philip and I took a very long time to research ways to generate income from home when we realized that our retirement funds were just not going to cut it for us. It was overwhelming, all the so-called opportunities online and at one stage, we thought we just wouldn’t find anything that we would help us and that we would enjoy doing. We knew nothing about working online.
Finally, we came upon a business that seemed quite easy to learn. It is called Affiliate Marketing. Once we saw that this was something we could run with, we then had to find somewhere that we could learn how to do this without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars and attending expensive conventions.
We found what we were looking for with a friendly Canadian company that let us come on in and check out the platform for FREE. This company has been around for 14 years which made us feel comfortable and the owners are authentic and credible.
Unfortunately, there is no legitimate system that will make you lots of money for very little work and affiliate marketing also requires perseverance and patience to achieve success. We enjoy writing and helping people and this business model ticks all the boxes for us.
You have the power within you to change your life, one step at a time. Believe in yourself and wonderful things can happen. We are on the journey with you.
I wish you every success,
