So much has happened recently worldwide and people are looking for ways to generate income safely from home. Voice over work is a real possibility and worth investigating if this is something that interests you. As someone who has worked professionally in the voice-over industry, I feel uniquely qualified to write this review of VO Genesis.
The voice-over industry is very exciting and potentially very lucrative and there are vast opportunities out there. However, it does require a good foundation of information and knowledge as it is also very competitive.
If you are interested in learning about voice-over work, I invite you to read further for my in-depth look at this course I researched for you to help you make a decision on whether this is something you would like to try.
What is VO Genesis?
VO Genesis is a product created by Jenny Lewis that will teach you how to do voice-over work, obtain jobs in the industry, and get paid for using your voice. It will also teach you how to take care of your voice, negotiate with potential clients, and, most importantly, in my opinion, market yourself.
Who is it For?
This product is for anyone interested in the voice over business but I believe it is best suited for beginners who have no previous experience and would like to learn about this profession starting at its basic level.
This is also a great option for retirees or someone approaching retirement who may want to try voice work but who don’t want to invest $100’s of dollars to learn about it.

Review of VO Genesis
When looking at this product, I took into consideration my own experience, having done voice-over work myself.
This product is 3 e-books in a PDF format. The main program has chapters such as:
- What types of V/O you can do
- Developing your skills
- The V/O industry
- Building your own home studio
- Recording and editing your V/O
The first bonus book (How to Triple Your Voice Over Fees Even If you Hate Negotiating) contains crucial information on the business side of the industry including:
- Negotiating your fees
- Invoicing clients
- Payment schedules
The second bonus book (How To Get More Voice Over Gigs Than You Can Handle) contains more information vital to long-term success in this industry such as:
- How to get more V/O gigs (jobs)
- Marketing yourself
- Finding an agent
- Voice casting websites
- Setting up your own V/O website
- Interview tips
The course also contains information on how to take care of yourself, physically, for this type of work. Voice work is much more physical than I think most people believe it to be.
I do know, from personal experience, that there is a huge amount of opportunity out there for voice work and contrary to what you might imagine, you don’t need a great deal of experience to start getting jobs. What you do need is the basics of understanding the industry, how to identify your strengths and making the time to practice (just like an athlete or a musician).
The VO Genesis course covers everything you need to know in order to get started. Jenny gives you all the fundamental information that you need including the types of work that are available. There is a vast array of opportunities and she teaches you how to identify what your strengths are so as to better to promote yourself for the type of voice work that is suitable for you. You learn about the different types of ‘delivery’ for a particular job such as a ‘spokesperson’, ‘narrator’ or ‘real person’, for example. Jenny says there is a demand for every type of voice and I do know that this is a fact.
What I liked about the course is that she also teaches you how to market yourself. In particular, I like the way she informs you on how to find an Agent and how to establish a professional, amicable and mutually beneficial relationship with that agent.
I had an Agent myself and I can tell you, if you have a good one, which I did, you won’t have to worry about finding work or negotiating fees. For a percentage of what you earn (which is set by industry standards, depending upon where you live), the Agent will take care of all of that for you and you can focus on practicing your voice skills and honing your talent. This aspect of Jenny’s course had great appeal to me and I think it is of great benefit to the new voice artist who may be a bit nervous about finding their own gigs.
In her promotional video, Jenny claims she got paid $250 for her very first voice-over job. This is quite possible (I have earned that for a 30-second spot) and it is not an exaggeration. The client doesn’t know if it is your very first recording or not. You wouldn’t tell the client this and neither would your Agent! The client just cares about whether you are ‘delivering’ what they want. So, this was realistic to me.
However, some of the other claims of how much you can make I do feel are a bit inflated, at least until you have established yourself over time with more advanced training and maybe a great Agent selling you as well.
It is important to be realistic when venturing forth in any new career. Nothing happens overnight, in any business. Hard work, study, practice, and perseverance are required for voice work just as in any other profession.
Jenny, in her video, talks about how she was making small amounts of money doing other things online, such as paid surveys and data entry. Well, she is correct in telling us that voice work will pay more than these types of work, but again, it won’t happen immediately and there is more training required for learning how to use your voice than there is for data entry and surveys.
VO Genesis provides that training, I believe, in a straightforward, realistic, easy to understand way. You could go to any number of voice over job websites yourself for free, but unless you know how to record yourself properly and have some kind of basic training, you will, at best, sound like an amateur and you won’t know what to charge or how to negotiate with people in the industry.
VO Genesis teaches you this as well. This profession has many, many opportunities but you won’t get very far if you don’t know how to communicate with professionals. There is a special language you need to learn in order to engage effectively with clients in the industry and a certain etiquette you need to follow. You will learn this with VO Genesis.
One needs to understand, too, that it will be necessary to purchase a microphone and create a little ‘recording studio’ in your own home (I used to use the closet) so that you can record without noisy distractions. Every sound is picked up by a microphone so this is something to consider if you want to do voice work. A quiet recording environment is essential.
Something else I found authentic about this program is that you are given a lot of resources to help you further your career such as websites that list job opportunities.
I believe that they are not trying to sell you this course as the ultimate resource guide for learning the industry, but rather that you are purchasing the foundation course necessary to begin.
Pros and Cons
- Realistic information
- Easy to follow
- 2 bonus books
- Sets a good foundation for the profession
- 60-day risk-free money-back guarantee from Clickbank
- Upsells, two of which are unrelated to the Voice Over industry
- Sales video a bit ‘hammy’
- Exaggerated $$ claims (at least to start with)
Final Thoughts on VO Genesis
If you are interested in voice work, the investment of $39.95 is reasonable. Many professional courses can cost a lot more than this, but if you are a beginner, you need to learn the basics. There is so much more to voice work than just sitting in front of a microphone and talking and I believe VO Genesis gives you enough information to get you started. With a money-back guarantee, what have you got to lose by checking it out?
Commitment is required to achieve long-term success in Voice Work!
Let’s keep it real and accept that no matter how many courses you make take, or videos you watch, or books you read, becoming a good voice over professional takes time and lots of effort. The human voice is like a tool or an instrument and it needs to be taken care of properly and you have to practice your skills and keep them updated.
VO Genesis won’t teach you absolutely everything you need to know about the voice work industry, but it will give you the foundation you need to get started and it will direct you to websites and resources on how to progress and learn more within the industry. It is also offered at a reasonable price point.
The sales video is a little ‘hammy’ in my opinion, but you must remember that voice work is ‘commercial’, so this is basically a commercial to sell you on the course. So, I have no issue with that.
I would have appreciated having access to this course when I began voice-over work myself, but unfortunately, it had not yet been created when I started.
The great thing too is that you can get a refund from Clickbank because it has a 60-day money-back guarantee. So, if it’s not for you, you get your money back. That is good business, to me.
