HouseSitMexico Review

Updated August 1, 2019

Would you like to vacation in México and get your accommodation for free?  Or maybe you are thinking of actually moving to México and would like to keep your living expenses to a minimum?  Either way, becoming a house-sitter could be a great option for you and the easiest way to find a suitable house sitting opportunity is through a house sitting website.

In this HouseSitMexico review, I take a look at this relatively new (since 2016) online house-sitting platform and let you know how effective it is in successfully matching homeowners and house-sitters in beautiful México. As the name implies, HouseSitMexico operates exclusively in Mexico which means they have the opportunity to become experts in a relatively small market. Let´s see if they are!

What is HouseSitMexico

HouseSitMexico is an online platform that puts homeowners in México in touch with house-sitters looking for temporary, free accommodation in exchange for them looking after the homeowners home and pet(s) (if any) while the homeowner is away.

The owner of HouseSitMexico, Alex Gordon, purchased the website from the previous owners in 2015.  At that time it was a very basic, single page, site that sought to put homeowners in Mexico in touch with potential house-sitters.  After multiple upgrades, the website was relaunched in 2016.

Who is it For

HousesitMexico is for anyone looking for free, temporary accommodation in México.  The only prerequisite for joining is that you are 21 or over.  There is no upper age limit. There are no qualifications required and you don’t even need any prior experience.  As the vast majority of all house sits involve looking after one or more pets it’s logical that you should have an affinity for animals and also be physically able to carry out the given responsibilities, such as exercise, vet visits, etc.

What a House-Sitter Does

Over and above living in the homeowners home (sleeping there every night is a standard requirement) a house-sitter may be asked to perform a variety of tasks but the following are the most common:

  • Keep the home clean and tidy
  • Water plants
  • Collect, and possibly forward, mail
  • Take out trash
  • Maintain pool
  • Arrange for necessary repairs to be carried out (typically at owners expense)

If the owner is leaving pets in the home the following additional tasks will likely apply:

  • Feed and water on a set schedule
  • Exercise
  • Veterinary visits
  • Grooming visits

Typically the required tasks are not too onerous and for a true animal lover, looking after any pets would likely not be considered a chore at all.

HouseSitMexico Review – Features and Benefits

Colette and I are already members of HouseSitMexico and so we are writing this review based on our own personal experience of the platform.

Using the Platform

The HouseSitMexico website offers a well designed, clean and user-friendly interface.  After you have joined up (see below) you will have access to your dashboard, and which, for a house-sitter, will look something like this:

housesitmexico house sitter member dashboard

From your Dashboard, you have direct access to your account information, Profile, and Message Center where you can view all communications with homeowners.  From your Dashboard, you can also view any reviews you have received from happy homeowners.

Joining Up as a House Sitter

Joining HouseSitMexico is a simple process.  All that is required is your full name and email address, then create a password and you are in.  You now have access to your Dashboard (see above).

Next, you need to complete your profile and this will take a little longer.  Your profile can be seen by every homeowner who is considering you for a house-sit and so you definitely want to give some careful thought to what goes in there.  Amongst other things, you will be including a short bio on yourself, any experience you may have with house/pet sitting, whether you have any preference as to which part(s) of Mexico you would like to house-sit, the types of animals you are comfortable with, and whether you have a preference for shorter or longer house-sits.  You will also be asked to add a profile photo of yourself.

Finally, you will have the opportunity to upload more images of yourself (with pets is recommended) together with some references for passing on to interested home-owners.  If you are just getting started with house-sitting, just add two or three character references.

Now you are ready to start looking and applying for house-sitting assignments.

Joining Up as a Homeowner

This is the same as for a house-sitter and so all that’s required is your name, email address, and password.

Once you have joined up you can start perusing the details of all the house-sitter members (there are filters for location, type of pet, duration of sit, etc.) and if you find one or two you are interested in you can send them a message, through the website’s internal messaging system, and when you find someone you are happy with you can finalize the house-sitting arrangement.  OR (and as recommended by HouseSitMexico) you can post a profile of house-sitting assignment and wait for interested house-sitters to contact you.

Finding a House-Sitting Assignment

Brief details of all current, open house-sitting assignments are listed on the “Find a House Sit” page on the website.  If you see something that interests you click on it for more information and the option to send a message to the homeowner.  A link to your profile is automatically added to your message so the homeowner can easily view your information before deciding whether to respond.  If they do the process has started.

Also on this page is a map of México with a visual of all currently available assignments:

Alternatively, you can wait to receive ‘Flash Updates’ from HouseSitMexico and which are automatically generated every time a new house-sitting assignment is posted on the website.

Once a week you will also receive a ‘weekly digest’ which gives details of all the house-sits posted in the preceding week and which are still available.

Finding a House-Sitter

As I mentioned previously, homeowners have the option of either perusing the database of available house-sitters or they can post details of the house-sitting assignment on the website following which a flash update is sent to every registered house-sitter.

As part of the posting process, the homeowner can include an unlimited number of images of their home and pet(s).

Secure Communications

For safety and security, all initial communications between home-owner and house-sitter are through the HouseSitMexico internal messaging system but the parties can subsequently communicate directly by joint agreement.

Useful Forms and Guidelines

The HouseSitMexico website includes lots of tips and advice for both home-owner and house-sitter aimed at making the whole house-sitting process go safely and smoothly from beginning to end.  This includes:

  • FAQs
  • Customized contact lists
  • Checklist for pet owners (what to do before leaving a pet in the care of others)
  • Checklist for homeowners (have you thought of everything?)
  • Customized house-sitting contract (Microsoft Word only)

Does it Work?

Speaking from experience, I can definitely confirm the system works because, within less than seven days of signing up, Colette and I secured our first house-sitting assignment and in exactly the location we were hoping for.  We are currently enjoying a month’s FREE stay in a beautiful home in Playa Del Carmen on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan peninsula.

HouseSitMexico Pros and Cons

  • Well designed, clean, and easy to use interface
  • New house-sitting assignments posted frequently
  • Reasonably priced (there are some cheaper house-sitting websites but there are also some that are much more expensive)
  • Safe and secure
  • Limited money-back guarantee for homeowners

  • As with all house-sitting websites, and as you would likely imagine, there are always going to be more house-sitters than available house-sitting opportunities although Alex Gordon informs me that the average number of applicants for each posted house-sit on her website is just 2 – 3 and which is great news for house-sitters.

Final Thoughts

I really like this website.  As I mentioned previously, Colette and I got our first house-sit in less than seven days of joining and we are optimistic we will get more.

If you have any questions or comments, please leave them in the comments box below and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
