In my never-ending quest to find legitimate ways to create some online income from home, I wanted to talk about another option for you. That is data entry. Have you ever wondered if data entry jobs from home are a good way to make an income?
What is Data Entry
Let us first define what it is.
It is, quite simply, the process of inputting ‘data’, or information, into a computer using a keyboard or a scanner.
Today, there are thousands of online data entry jobs available thanks, of course, to the internet and because it is less expensive for employers or companies to pay someone to do this type of work from home than to set up an office for them.
What Qualifications Are Required
Typically, this type of work does not require advanced degrees.
If you possess some typing skills and have a High School level of education and can read and write English, you have what it takes to get started.
What equipment do I need
You would have to have a reliable desktop or laptop and maybe some good headphones if you are listening to someone speaking and transcribing it.
I also feel it is essential to have a quiet, dedicated workspace, set up as your home office or at least set yourself up in a place in your home where you won’t be constantly distracted.
Try to get the most ergonomically correct chair you can afford and get a decent desk. Who knows, but you could end up doing data entry full time so you want to make sure your work environment is user-friendly. Being comfortable will make you more productive.
Types of Data Entry Jobs
These are some of the opportunities available to you when it comes to doing data entry:
This is perhaps the most fundamental of data entry jobs. You would likely be typing into a word document or on a spreadsheet. You could be typing anything including transcribing hand-written documents. You could even be listening to audio and typing what you hear into word documents or similar.
You must have a competent typing speed of 30-40 words per minute so if you are not at this point, I suggest you check out Philip’s review of Typsey, a great program to help you improve your speed (he is currently in the program himself, by the way).
You can make a full-time income from transcription work and this is a great career to do from home.
However, if you need help getting started, I suggest you look into taking some quality training. If you would like to know more about becoming a home-based transcriptionist and starting your own business check out my review of Transcribe Anywhere.
Copy and Paste
Here you will be asked to copy material from an excel or word file and paste it into another one. Attention to detail and command of the English language are important here so that you understand what you are copying and pasting.
You have probably seen those little boxes with jumbled letters and/or numbers that ask you to write them correctly in the space below to confirm that you are not a robot.
The way this works is that many companies need to sign up to thousands of websites and they can create software to sign up, but there is no automated technology to solve these Captcha images. Therefore, humans are needed to quickly type them into that space correctly. This is called Captcha solving and you can make money doing this type of work.
You need to be quick and accurate but you could pull in around $300-$500 a month. You would need to sign up with multiple companies to achieve this, but it is doable.
Catalog data entry operator
In this type, you would be asked to create an inventory list and usually in an Excel spreadsheet.
There are then the usual things to fill out for each item such as product name, serial number, how many are left in stock, price and so on. This is a very typical data entry job.
Payroll data entry
Similar to the catalog data entry above, you would be generating a list of employee information such as name, address, and salary, in an Excel spreadsheet.
Here you will be reading emails that are sent to your inbox daily, then processing them according to whatever instructions you are given. There is always a format to follow for this process.
You then send those processed emails to a ‘pre-written’ email address.
It is possible to be paid $1 to $5 per email. So say if you processed 5 emails a day at $2, that would make you $10 a day which is $300 a month.
Process more and you can easily do the math and see that this could be a nice little side income to help you. This is, in fact, one of the higher paying data entry jobs out there.
If you have a sharp eye for seeing grammatical and punctuation mistakes, this is a very good type of job for you. Be aware that you must have a great command of the English language and be a stickler for perfection.
Can I Make Money
The answer is yes.
I gave you a couple of examples above for some types of data entry jobs, but much depends on how much time you are willing to spend on it and what types of data entry you will be doing.
Working as a transcriptionist, processing emails and Captcha entry are a few of the better-paying options.
How do I Find Data Entry Jobs
It is free to just get on your board and surf the internet for the various data entry jobs out there. But of course, this could take you weeks of work, if not months and could become very tedious and frustrating because there are a plethora of online data entry opportunities.
I suggest that, if you would like to start promoting yourself right away online and have the jobs come to you, consider creating a profile for yourself and selling your talents on Fiverr. You can read about this global marketing website in my review here.
It’s fun and free to join!
By doing data entry work, you can at least be paying some bills. Of course, what you earn will also be based on how fast and accurate your typing skills are, what kind of data entry work you are doing and how long you spend doing it.
Industry trends tell us that this field is growing so there should be no shortage of work.
Have you done data entry work yourself? What type? Have you personally found it to be a way to make a good part-time or full-time income? I would love it if you could share your experience in the comments area. It could be very helpful to others reading this who may want to try it themselves.
